The Rotary Club of Forest Grove mourns the death of longtime member Jim Cain, who died on June 27, 2026 at the age of 89.
Jim joined the Rotary Club of Forest Grove in 2008, and enjoyed serving alongside his friends and fellow club members.
Jim was born July 7, 1936, in Portland, Oregon, the son of the late Loren and Jesse Mae (Judy) Cain. He was raised in Portland, attending Franklin High School, Willamette University and the University of Oregon, where he graduated from in 1958 with a degree in business.
After graduation, Jim served in the US Army as a commissioned officer in Frankfort, Germany until 1963, when he returned to Portland to join his father at Standard Insurance. He later made the decision to pursue a career in dentistry and returned to school for predental studies and graduated with a DMD from the University of Oregon Dental School in 1970.
Jim married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Snodgrass, in 1958 and they led a full life together until Darlene passed away in 2015. They were inseparable partners throughout their 56-year marriage, working as a team in Jim’s dental practice in Tigard and on numerous community and national service organizations including the local school board, Habitat for Humanity, Rotary Club, and the American Diabetes Association. They raised their family in Portland and Sherwood, and then eventually moved to a log home in Gaston, where they enjoyed entertaining family and friends in a truly peaceful setting.
Jim’s life embodied service to his family, community, education, and dentistry. He also held a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors and was an avid and expert hunter, fisherman, skier, and international traveler. He will be remembered as a person that loved telling stories but was equally good as a listener to the stories of others. He brought endless curiosity and kindness that lit up every gathering and had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel special. This world is a better place thanks to the lessons that Jim left for all of us.
Jim is survived by his children: Jeff, Mark and Charla Cain, and Jennifer Cain-Birkmose; five grandchildren: Chelsea Cain-Maclin (Wilson), Alexandra Cain-Wildeson (Cooper), James Cain (Georgia), Lilith and Malou Cain-Birkmose; two great-grandchildren: Henry and Charlotte Maclin; his sisters: Virginia Chanda (Dick) and Shirley McCabe (Dan), and his companion Jody Everts.
