FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Senior Sylas Schaumburg and eighth-grader Kyler Trout of Gaston Jr./Sr. High School have been recognized as the Rotary Club of Forest Grove’s Youth Citizens of the Month for the month of November.

Schaumburg and Trout were recognized for the award at a club meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15. For being selected as Youth Citizens of the Month, both received a certificate and a $50 gift certificate to Frye’s Action Athletics.

Schaumburg, the child of Kendra Schaumburg, was a member of the Greyhounds’ football team and is one of the most active members of the school’s welding CTE program. Emily Dias, who submitted the nomination, said that Schaumburg is always a positive presence inside and outside of school and is respected and appreciated by students and staff alike.

“Sylas is a wonderful student to have on our campus,” Dias said. “He has a positive energy that you can always count on and has greatly contributed to both our football team and our welding CTE program.”

Trout, the child of Isaac & Kelly Trout, participates as a cellist in the school’s orchestra club. He was singled out for being a kind and respectful student to everyone he meets and as someone who knows how to work hard and play hard.

“Kyler is a wonderful all-around student,” Dias said. “In the classroom, he is a great participant and works hard to achieve high marks. He is also always kind and respectful of his friends and adults.”

A long-standing program with the Rotary Club of Forest Grove, the Youth Citizen of the Month program was restarted in 2023 after a three-year COVID-19 hiatus. The program recognizes local eighth-graders and high school seniors who possess high standards of personal behavior and good citizenship, exemplify the ideals of Rotary, follow school rules and have excellent behavioral records.

The Rotary Youth Citizen of the Month is rotated between the area’s three local school districts: Forest Grove, Banks & Gaston.
