Nominated by teachers and administrators, and rotated monthly between Forest Grove, Banks and Gaston high schools, the Rotary Club of Forest Grove Youth Citizen of the Month program recognizes students who possess high standards of personal behavior and good citizenship, exemplify the ideals of Rotary, follow school rules and have excellent behavioral records.

In December we honored Francesca Douglas from Gaston Junior/Senior High School. Francesca is involved in leadership and is a peer helper/tutor. She is also a creative writer and was invited to attend the Oregon Writing Conference. She is kind, compassionate, excited for school, a hard worker, smart and a fantastic writer. She was the first person in 12 years to get a perfect score on her safety test in her wood shop class. All of her teachers report that Francesca takes initiative in her classes, uses her time efficiently, and always delivers outstanding work. She has initiated opportunities for her class and school through Junior High Leadership and continuously engages with both peers and teachers in a positive manner.

Also from Gaston Junior/Senior High School, we honored Abigail Oliver. Abigail is a dependable student with a positive attitude. She works diligently and is helpful to others by being a peer tutor in many of her classes. In addition to her academic strengths, Abby is also artistic. In her jewelry class, she turns basic patterns into extraordinary, intricate works. She is a successful playwright, having authored this year’s winter drama production, “The Animal Parliament.” Not only did she write the play, she also acted and assisted with casting and direction. Abby works well in challenging situations and always demonstrates a willingness to learn. Additionally, she has served outside of the Gaston community by participating in two mission trips, one in South Africa and the other in Ecuador.
